“A B C, it's easy as 1 2 3, as simple as Do Re Me, A B C, 1 2 3…”  (That’s a song from the Jackson 5 if you did not know. And I’m dating myself.)

The ABC’s of Special Education are NOT as easy as 1 2 3 or Do Re Mi. Let me help you through the Alphabet Soup that is Special Education Acronyms.

Click the link if you would like the one-page cheat sheet I made.  I suggest printing it and keeping it in the notebook or binder you take to IEP meetings.

However, if you hear an unfamiliar acronym during a meeting, just ask what it stands for.  It does not make you look ignorant. The real test will be if the person using the acronym knows what it stands for!  Think of it as a pop quiz for them.

All these acronyms make a Special Education language you are not yet fluent in. It takes time to be fluent. I’ve been in the school system since 2014 and still have to ask or look up some of the infrequently used acronyms.
